Boyle Wins $80,000 Bradley Teletheater Handicapping Challenge

Qualifies for DRF/NTRA tournament along with 2nd place finisher Paul Shurman


New Haven, June 28, 2004, Scientific Games Corporation (NASDAQ:SGMS) – Joseph Boyle connected on two winners on Sunday afternoon to win the seventh annual Autotote Bradley Teletheater Handicapping Challenge, held the weekend of June 26-27.

            Boyle, from Monmouth Beach, NJ, earned the first place prize of $20,000.  Paul Shurman, of Dix Hills, NY, finished second, winning $10,000.

            In addition to their earnings, the top two finishers also qualify for the Daily Racing Form/National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s national championship held in Las Vegas in 2005.

            Boyle, who owns the popular Monmouth Track establishment, Boyle’s Tavern, was in second place with $6,620 going into the second day of the two-day contest, trailing Shurman who had $8,400. Contestants are required to make ten $200 wagers each day. The person with the highest total wins the contest.

            On day two, however, Boyle passed Shurman with two win bets to give him a grand total of $10,700 in contest points.  He placed $200 to win on Second Performance ($23.00) in race seven at Belmont, and $200 to win on Loramateal ($17.80) on Churchill Downs’ race ten, a two-year-old maiden filly event.

            Shurman, a 2003 Autotote On The Wire phone wagering contest champion, also cashed two winners on Sunday, but his return was only $1,890, giving him $10,290 for the entire contest. Richard Rooney, of East Sandwich, MA, finished third with $9,520, earning him $6,750 in prize money.  Bart Fooden, Port Washington, NY, had $9,400 in contest earnings, taking home $4,750 in prize money.  Chuck Snyder, Glastonbury, CT, and Paul Weizer, Leominster, MA, tied for fifth, with $8,380 each in the contest, earning $3,750 in prize money.

            This year’s event also included a $10,000 Sunday contest, where the top three scorers on day two of the event win prize money.  Gary Triplett, Mechanicsburg, PA, turned his Sunday picks into $6,500 in contest points, winning $7,000 for his efforts.  Richard Kessler, Richwood, NJ ($5,200 points) finished second winning $2,000, and Jim Cramer, Galloway, NJ ($4,200 points) landed in third, earning $1,000.

            The 2004 Handicapping Challenge featured several previous winners of Autotote contests.  Rick Lang (1999 Sports Haven Handicapping Challenge) finished in 42nd place, and David Crupi (1999 Bradley Handicapping Challenge) finished in 91st place. Other past winners in the contest included George Elliott (2004 Sports Haven Handicapping Challenge), John Gilberg (2000 Bradley Champion), Dennis Sudul (2002 July On The Wire contest), Stuart Rubin (2002 Sports Haven Challenge), Steve Wolfson, Sr. (2003 On The Wire contest) and Steve Wolfson, Jr. (2003 On the Wire contest).

Several journalists competed in this year’s contest, including Jerry Bossert (New York Daily News), Sherman Cain (Manchester Journal-Inquirer), Jim Corbett (American Turf Monthly), Steve Davidowitz (author of “Betting Thoroughbreds”), Bob Ehalt (Stamford Advocate/ Thoroughbred Times), Dan Nowak (New Haven Register), Ron Rippey (Newark Star Ledger), and Anthony Stabile (New York Post).

Handicapping News: On the Wire Wagering Contest, July 17 

Top finisher to qualify for DRF/NTRA National Championship

Autotote will conduct two $5,000 On the Wire phone contests, July 17 and December 4.  The winner of each contest will qualify for the DRF/NTRA contest. Entry fee is $200 and contestants can make any type of wager on any track Autotote is offering.

Autotote owns and operates the Connecticut Off-Track Betting system. Locations are Sports Haven in New Haven, Bradley Teletheater in Windsor Locks, RaceView Centers in Bristol, Hartford, New Britain and Torrington and branches in Bridgeport, East Haven, Milford, Norwalk, Waterbury and West Haven.

 

2004 Bradley Teletheater Handicapping Contest Rules

1.      Entry fee $350 (One entry per person, although in the event that the contest is not fully subscribed by Thursday, June 24, people may purchase an additional entry. People may have no more than two entries)  

2.      Contest is limited to 225 entries. The contest is a two-day event that will be held Saturday, June 26 and Sunday, June 27, 2004.

3.      The top two finishers in the Bradley contest will be eligible to compete in the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) Handicapping Championship tournament to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, January 2005. Air transportation and hotel accommodations are courtesy of Autotote Enterprises. 

4.      Autotote will add $1,250 to the purse. If the contest is fully subscribed, there will be $80,000 in prize money. One hundred percent of the $80,000 will be returned as prize money. 

5.      All prizes are aggregate and if ties exists, prize money will be divided equally by entrants finishing in all positions involved in the tie.

6.      Two thousand, two hundred and fifty dollars ($2,250) will be distributed to the first three finishers after the first day of the contest. The person in first place will receive $1,500.  The second place contestant will receive $500 and the third place finisher will receive $250. On the second day,  $7,000 will awarded to the person who has the highest one day point total on Sunday. The person with the second highest total on Sunday will receive $2,000 and the person with the third highest Sunday total will receive $1,000.

7.      The remaining $67,750 will be distributed to the top 20 finishers after the two day event. (Order of finish is determined by combining the Saturday and Sunday scores).

8.        The contest is for a two-day period. The races used will be from Belmont, Churchill Downs, and Hollywood Park. (Note: Only the first six races from Hollywood will be used in the contest on Saturday. On Sunday, only the first six races from Hollywood will be used). In the event that a track cancels, a substitute track, determined by the contest judges, will be used.

9.        All entrants must be present to participate in the contest at the Bradley Teletheater. There will be no refunds.

10.     Each entry is allowed $2,000 maximum contest wagering dollars per contest day and a maximum of $200 per wager.

11.     Each entrant must make ten bets each day of the contest. Contest wagers must be made in increments of $50. Win, place and show bets only. No exotic wagers.

12.     Each contest wager must be made on one horse for a total wager of $200. The bets must be for win, place and /or show. For example, a person may make a $100 win wager and a $50 place wager and a $50 show wager on one horse in a race. Contest wagers are limited to one horse per race. All multiple wagers per race or multiple horses per race are void and will not be credited or refunded (zero points /dollars). If any wagers are made for less than $200 contest dollars, the remaining amount will be void. For example, if an entrant wagers $100 to win on a horse and fails to wager the remaining $100 of the $200 wager, then $100 will be void. The entrant will only have a $100 bet on the race.

13.     Any unused portion of the $2,000 in daily contest dollars become void once all contest races each day are completed. Any unused wagers will be worth zero dollars   and will not be credited or refunded.

14.     Wagers will be accepted at a designated area in Bradley Teletheater.

15.  The winner of the contest is the person who accumulates the most contest dollars for the two day contest.

Contest Scoring

1.      Net contest dollars will be awarded based on full track pari-mutuel pay-offs, up to 20-1. The highest dollars awarded for a win will be $42. (For example, if a horse goes off at 30-1 and pays $62, the player will only be credited with $42). Place pay-offs will be calculated up to 10-1. The highest dollars awarded for place will be $22. Show pay-offs will be calculated up to 5-1. The highest show price will be $12.

2.      Losing wagers will count as zero contest dollars.

General Rules

1.      All official track rules will apply to the horses wagered on in this contest except as otherwise stipulated. Contest dollars will be awarded based on official placement and mutuels at each designated track.

2.      Entries and fields go as a single betting interest. 

3.      No turf only or dirt only wagers will be accepted.

4.      If an entrant’s selection is scratched, the contestant will be credited the amount and allowed to re-bet as long as a designated contest race remains open for wagering during the day. Any unused wagers will be worth zero points and will not be credited or refunded.

5.      The entrant is responsible for ensuring that his entry form is correct. No changes will be allowed after the race involved has been closed.

6.      People who have already qualified for the DRF/NTRA tournament may not qualify again. In the event that a person who has already qualified finishes first or second, the third place finisher will qualify for the DRF/NTRA contest. 

7.      The decision of the judges in all matters related to the contest is final.

8.      All contestants must be at least 21 years of age.

9.      Autotote reserves the right to fund the entry fees of invited members of the media.

10.  Winners are subject to all state and federal tax requirements.

11.  The receipt of a registration form signifies the entrant’s acceptance of all rules and conditions stated herein

12.  All participants agree to have their name or image appear in any publicity material (posters, newsletters, programs, etc) and to be printed in any publication.

13.  Officers and employees and their immediate families, of Autotote Corporation and its subsidiaries and the employees of the Division of Special Revenue, State of Connecticut, are not eligible to enter the contest.

14.  The right is reserved to terminate or withdraw this contest at any time without prior notice. In this event, all entry fees will be refunded.
